INTERMEDIATE HURLERS COMPLETE LEAGUE CAMPAIGN

Last Friday evening, June 27th, our Premier Intermediate hurlers made the 1-hour commute west into Carbery territory to contest Bandon in their ninth and final round fixture of the Red FM sponsored Division 4 Hurling League. Played at Pairc Cathal Ui Muirtle or better known as “Charlie Hurley Park”, Bandon entered this game already qualified for the league final having won all eight of their fixtures to date. Our opposition quickly laid down a marker as after just 17 seconds of play they had registered their first score of the evening, and after 16 minutes played they comfortable led 1-10 to 0-05 with the Kilworth scores coming from the camán’s of Liam Óg Hegarty, Eoin Carey, & Jamie Sheehan.

Kilworth, however, finished the half the strongest and through further points from Liam Óg, midfielder Jeremy Saich & center forward Eoin Carey, followed by a crisp Noel McNamara three pointer just before the interval they now trailed by just 7 points. Half time score: Kilworth 1-08, Bandon 2-12.

Bandon, just like the first half were the first to register a score after the water break as after 3 minutes played a green flag was waved by the umpire in their favor which extended their advantage back to double digits. Kilworth, however, kept their cool and with their never say die attitude registered four unanswered points with Jamie, Liam Óg, & Noely once again hitting the target to leave the scoreline reading 1-12 to 3-12 on the three quarter mark.

With the introduction of club veterans John Horgan and Sean Beecher to the fold midway through the second half the lads to their credit kicked on for the remaining 15 minutes and slowly started to crawl back the lead. Eoin Carey who was leading by example, joined by the in-form Noely Mac hit two points each respectively and with time almost up Kilworth miraculously now trailed the league table toppers by just four points. Kilworth’s hopes where further enhanced a minute later as a Leo Coffey strike beat the Bandon keeper to leave just a mere point between the sides, however the yellow and white coloured side finished off the evening with the last puck of the game as they scored from a converted free to hold on for a narrow two point win. Full time score: Kilworth 2-16, Bandon 3-15.

Summarising the league campaign, Kilworth finished with a total of 9 points gained from nine games played, equalling 4 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw. Both injury and the unavailability of several players was once again a major contributing factor which no doubt caused a real headache at times for the management team but saying that a positive recognition is that Kilworth were the third highest scoring team in the league with a total tally of 197 points scored which is a remarkable achievement in itself. The buildup is now well underway for the Championship campaign which kicks off in four weeks’ time on Thursday evening July 31st against Castlemartyr.

Team & Scorers: Sean Keane, Brian Dunne, Kieran Lane, Nathan Byrne, Sean Óg Kenneally, David Twomey, Michael Gowen, Jeremy Saich 0-01, Leo Coffey 1-00, Jamie Sheehan 0-02, Eoin Carey 0-05, Daniel O’Regan, Liam Óg Hegarty 0-04 (2-f), Noel McNamara 1-04 (2-f), & Darragh Sheehan.
