HIGH SCORING WIN OVER BALLYHEA

Kilworth 3-19 Ballyhea 2-19

Our intermediate hurlers made it five wins from six games played in this years Red FM Division 2 Hurling league following a high scoring and deserved three point winning margin over Ballyhea played in Ballyhea last Tuesday night (May 31st). Even though we were the better team for most of the game and should have had a more comfortable victory, Ballyhea also had their spells of dominance. Their second goal against the run of play in the 51st minutes led to a nervous enough finish in a game that should have been put to bed well before the final whistle.

We led by three points 1-13 to 1-10 at the interval, and against the wind in the second half maintained this advantage to leave the final score 3-19 to 2-19.

In a tight opening the sides were level 0-7 each at the end of the first quarter. We led 0-9 to 0-8 in the 21st minute before a speculative Ballyhea shot from the left side-line nestled in the far top corner of the net to give the hosts the lead for the first time since the 4th minutes 0-9 to 1-8. Ballyhea extended their advantage to three points before Kilworth went on to dominate the remainder of the half landing 1-4 without reply to lead 1-13 to 1-9 after thirty first half minutes. Liam Whelan who thundered into the game scoring 1-2 in a three-minute spell. The goal was one of high quality, Noel McNamara in a deep position found Jeromy Saich with a great pass. Jeromy went on a menacing run, before timing a perfect ball across to Liam, through the centre who made no mistake. Ballyhea with a late free left it 1-13 to 1-10 at half time.

Ballyhea opened the second half scoring before Eoin Carey converted his first and Kilworth’s second green flag of the game and the score read 2-13 to 1-11 in the 33rd minute. A quick free from Kieran Lane following a foul on Brian Sheehan found the Ballyhea defence at sixes and sevens and Eoin was on hand to dispatch the ball to the net. Ballyhea responded well with the next four white flags (2 frees) to reduce their arears to the bare minimum 2-13 to 1-15 with twenty minutes to go. The lads needed to up it again and that they did with a crucial third goal. A free out of defence from Kieran Walsh following a foul on Mike Gowen dropped dangerously inside the 14, Jeromy Saich gathered position amongst a tight bunch of players before passing out to an on running Eoin Carey who doubled the ball to the roof of the net with a great finish. Leo Coffey with his second point of the game followed by a Noel McNamara free opened a six-point lead 3-15 to 1-15 by the 47th minute. Ballyhea in typical fashion battled hard, fighting back with 1-2 of their own to again reduce the arrears to a single score 3-15 to 2-17 with nine minutes remaining on the clock. However, the lads had no intention of leaving this one slip, going on to stem the rot lifting it once more finishing the game strong forcing four frees which Noel McNamara converted. Ballyhea themselves added two overs in the closing minutes as Kilworth saw it out with three points to spare.

Following wins over Ballinhassig, Kildorrery, Blackrock, Blarney and Ballyhea, one defeat to Courcey Rovers and with two games remaining against Carrigaline and Watergrasshill the lads are in a great position to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.
