FOOTBALLERS SEAL FINAL BERTH

KILWORTH 4-07 CHARLEVILLE 1-11

Our junior footballers qualified for a 5th North Cork Junior A Football final and 3rd final in five years following a 4-07 to 1-11 triumph over reigning champions Charleville last Saturday afternoon in Castletownroche. Searching for a first title, we will face Buttevant (who beat us in the 2017 final) in the championship decider on October 30th. 

The lads dug deep showing great character to come out on top in a highly entertaining game. Leading 1-3 to 0-1 at the first water break and 1-5 to 0-5 at halftime, we lost a player to a black card in the third quarter but still led 2-6 to 1-7 at the second water break. Charleville forced level 2-6 to 1-9 by the 53rd minutes and the game was very much in the balance. The lads showed desire in abundance with a never say die attitude and a strong finish saw them outscore Charleville 2-1 to 0-2 in the latter stages to annex a well- deserved win. 

Playing with the elements, the first score of the game came inside the opening minute, with Mike Sheehan opening our account with a lovely point from play. James McCarthy finding Brian Sheehan with a precision ball from defence before Brian passed to Mike to shoot and score. Charleville were off the mark after two minutes landing a close in free. Both defences were on top for the next five minutes or so, both sides getting into promising attacking positions only for the play to break down due to some indecision and good defending. Kilworth made the first major breakthrough of the game after eight minutes with a sweeping move ending in a goal. Dave Twomey with a free out from defence found Sean Keane who laid off to Leo Coffey who in turn released Brian Sheehan. Brian found Will Condon who rifled the ball to the back of the net and Kilworth led 1-1 to 0-1. A great save from Killian Heggtveit denied Charleville an immediate reply, the resulting ‘45’ was kicked wide. Another Charleville goal chance was snuffed out following more good defending from our defence and keeper, before Nathan Byrne kicked an excellent point following good play from James McCarthy to extend the lead to four points after thirteen minutes. Eoin McGrath set up Brian Sheehan who attacked up the left before drawing a free which Eoin Carey pointed with the water break whistle sounding once the ball went dead to leave it 1-3 to 0-1 after 16 minutes.

Charleville had the better of the opening second quarter exchanges but only added one point from a free when on top, our defence outstanding once more forcing their opponents into kicking two wides in quick succession. Eoin Carey relieved the pressure with a second pointed free following a foul on Brian Sheehan after good approach play from Mike Sheehan to leave it 1-4 to 0-2. Both sides were guilty of wayward shooting before two white flags from Charleville in the 26th and 27th minute reduced their arrears to three points 1-4 to 0-4. Kilworth hit back Brian Sheehan punishing a foul on Kieran Lane to extend the lead to four approaching the short whistle. Charleville went in search of a three pointer before the break, Dave Twomey with a vital block denied Charleville a goal, the rebound punched over the bar to leave it 1-5 to 0-5 at the interval.

Shortly after the changeover a Charleville kick for a point came back off the post with Dave Twomey on hand to gather possession and start a counterattack up field. The ball ended up with Eoin Carey who was fouled in an advanced position with Brian Sheehan converting the resulting free to extended Kilworth’s advantage. From the next passage of play Sean Keane raised our second green flag as he slotted home from close range. Eoin McGrath claimed a mark from the Charleville kick with the ball worked quickly towards goal. Leo Coffey cut in along the end line before sending a slick pass to Sean Keane to finish to the net and Kilworth looked to have a comfortable 2-6 to 0-5 advantage. But Charleville to their credit, refused to give up and they rallied to land 1-2 as the score read 2-6 to 1-7 by the 43rd minute. Their two points notched from play with the goal coming from a penalty, Kilworth reduced to fourteen men as a result with the issuing of a black card to our keeper. Charleville smelt blood and attempted to make hay with the numerical advantage but couldn’t get the gap below two points by the second water break. On the resumption Charleville continued to pile on the pressure and while we were back to a full complement of 15 by the 51st minute two further Charleville points in the 52nd and 53rd minutes tied up the game 2-6 to 1-9 and an exciting finish was in prospect. Kilworth after soaking up a lot of pressure readjusted with Eoin Carey lifting the siege kicking a pointed free after he himself was fouled as Kilworth regained the lead. As Charleville attacked in numbers attempting to draw level once more, Kilworth soon found more space at the other end with a Mike Sheehan kick at goal rebounding to Henry Allen who slotting home and suddenly Kilworth led by four 3-7 to 1-9 as we approached full time. Henry who came on into goals following the black card moved into the forwards once we were back to fifteen.  Charleville again stormed forward adding a point, and as they pushed for another goal the ball was turned over in our half and sent forward to an unmarked Leo Coffey who displayed coolness personified to lob the keeper with an exquisite finish grabbing our 4th goal deep into injury time. There was time for one more play with Charleville completing the scoring with a point to leave it at the final whistle 4-07 to 1-11. This was an excellent and well-deserved win. Our Premier Intermediate hurlers take on Valley Rovers in the Co-Op Superstores PIHC Quarter Final in Blarney Sunday afternoon with a 3pm throw in, and we wish the best of luck to the panel of players and team management. Let’s hope the winning momentum continues. Again, please note tickets for the game will only be available to purchase online via gaacork.ie. Tickets will not be available to purchase through the club and there will be no tickets on sale at the gate on the day. Tickets must be purchased online before Saturday priced at €8, student and other concessions will also be available online.
