SHOWDOWN WITH BALLINHASSIG

The group stages of the Co Op Superstores Cork County hurling championships reach a conclusion this weekend with a number of places in the knockout stages up for grabs. Best of luck to our Premier Intermediate hurlers and their management team as they take on Ballinhassig in a crunch Round 3 tie in Glantane (Kilshannig’s club grounds) this Saturday evening under lights with a 7.30pm throw in. Following a draw with Ballincollig and a win over Aghada we are well placed to progress. There are a few different permutations that may arise, however a win or a draw will suffice to advance without relying on other results. In either of these scenarios a quarter final tie is the most likely outcome but a win and there maybe an outside chance of a semi-final spot, depending on results at the top of the other two groups. Please note tickets for the game will only be available to purchase online via gaacork.ie. Tickets will not be available to purchase through the club and there will be no tickets on sale at the gate on the day. Tickets must be purchased online before Saturday priced at €8, student and other concessions will also be available online.

REELING IN THE YEARS – 2012 D1IHL CHAMPIONS

2012 was a great year for the club winning the Intermediate hurling championship and league double. The league final played six days after the county final championship win was against Saturday nights opponents. Ballinhassig had won the Premier Intermediate championship, were preparing for Munster club competition and were strong favourites.

This turned out to be a cracking game of hurling, and many people regarded it as the best display from a Kilworth team in many years. Here is the match report from Club PRO at the time, Michelle O’Keeffe as carried on the Avondhu edition on October 25th, 2012

HURLERS TOP OFF FANTASTIC WEEK WITH LEAGUE TITLE

Rochestown Park Hotel Division 1 Hurling League final

Kilworth 1-14 Ballinhassig 0-11

Kilworth finished off a great week in style on Saturday evening last when they overcame Ballinhassig by 6 points to be crowned Division 1 Hurling League champions for 2012. This game was played under lights at Sarsfield’s hurling grounds with a 7.30pm throw in.

The opposition had the better start to the game, very like the county final the week before, as they led 0-3 to 0-0 after 12 minutes of play. However, Kilworth’s first score was to come a minute later when Noel McNamara was fouled in the square, we were awarded a penalty. Adrian Mannix stepped up to take it and buried a great shot in the bottom left-hand corner of the net, to leave the game 0-3 to 1-0 after 13 minutes. Ballinhassig responded with a point before Mannix added a pointed free for Kilworth. The opposition tagged on a further 3 points before the break, while Kilworth added 2 of their own to leave the halftime score line reading 1-3 to 0-7, with the boys in red trailing by just a point despite Ballinhassig’s overall dominance in the opening half. This gave us great confidence heading for the final 30 minutes of the game.

Kilworth made the perfect start to the second half when half-time substitute Will Condon scored a great point from play to level the tie for the fourth time. We looked a lot sharper on the ball and had most of the possession, as we moved into a five-point lead by the 15th minute after some great scores from forwards Noel McNamara, Nathan Byrne, Paudie Lynch and Adrian Mannix. We were well on top at this stage. Adrian Mannix added another point in the 17th minute, a great shot taken close to the side-line, while Noel McNamara displayed fantastic individual skill, added another a minute later to leave the score line reading 1-12 to 0-9, with just 12 minutes remaining.

Ballinhassig had a number of wides but this was mainly due to the tremendous pressure they were put under by the Kilworth backs, who all produced great performances on the night. The premier Intermediate champions never gave up but Kilworth always maintained their lead and in the end, they ran our worthy winners on the final score line of 1-14 to 0-11.

After the game, captain Brian Tobin accepted the trophy on behalf of the team, and it was extra special as Kilworth will be the first name to be put on the Donnelly Cup. The lads then travelled home and continued their well-earned celebrations!

This win finished off what has been a great year for both this team and the club. We would like to congratulate everyone involved with the team, manager Declan Walsh, coach TJ Ryan, selectors Aidan Kenny and Fred Sheedy, conditioning coach Damien O ‘Donoghue, team assistant Darren Kenny, physio Caroline Coughlan, medic Mike Walsh, and of course all the players on this fantastic victory and the unbelievable amount of work you all put in throughout the year. It is greatly appreciated by everyone.

On behalf of the club, we would like to thank all those who made the journey to Sarsfield’s on Saturday evening to support the lads and roar them to victory. It was a great sight to see again, less than a week after the heroics of the county final.

Kilworth will now play senior hurling league next year, with all the big teams and of course we will also be playing premier intermediate championship hurling which is something I’m sure we all relish the thought of!
