JAFC R2 – Kilworth 1-13 Glanworth 0-05

On Wednesday June 13th our junior footballers made the short trip to Ballygiblin where they took on neighbours Glanworth in the second round of this year’s Junior ‘A’ Football Championship. Before the game began, both sides observed a minutes silence to remember the late James Meaney and John Joe Shanahan. The ball was thrown-in and Kilworth played against the wind in the first half. Jason McCarthy (0-1) opened the scoring proceedings with a point from a free after Eoin McGrath was fouled heading towards goal. This was quickly cancelled out by Glanworth who scored a free of their own a minute later. Jason McCarthy(0-1) and Paudie Lynch(0-1) tagged on another two points from play but our concession of frees were keeping Glanworth in it and after 20 minutes the side were locked on 0-3 apiece. Jason stepped up again(0-1) with a free to push us ahead by one and Brian Sheehan(0-2) made it a three point lead a few minutes later when he also popped over two frees. Aidan Condon(0-1) closed the half with a well taken point from play and at half time in what were difficult playing conditions, we led by 0-7 to 0-3.

Kilworth continued to dominate the second half and at the 40 minute mark we had extended our lead to 1-8 to 0-3 after a point from Eoin McGrath (0-1) and a well taken goal from Jason McCarthy (1-0) which was set up by Brian Sheehan. Aidan Condon (0-1) then tagged on his second point of the night to extend out lead nine points, 1-9 to 0-3. Glanworth grabbed one back with their first point from play but Kilworth were on top all over the field and they continued to push on. Jason McCarthy (0-2) extended his tally of scores for the night when he registered two more points, the first from a free and the second from play in the 17th and 19th minutes. Substitute Pat O’Brien (0-1) also got on the score sheet with a point of his own in the 21st minute. Kilworth now led 1-12 to 0-4. Paudie Lynch closed out the scoring for Kilworth (0-1) before Glanworth finished the game with a late consolation point. At the final whistle Kilworth were deserving winners on the score line of 1-13 to 0-5. Well done to all the players and management on a great performance and well worked win. We wish you all the very best of luck in the quarter-final where you will meet either Kilavullen or Buttevant.
