THE LONG WAIT CONTINUES 2017-09-12 11:27:00

NORTH CORK JAFC FINAL – Kilworth 1-09 Buttevant 2-13

The long wait for our first every junior ‘A’ North Cork Football Championship title continues for another year following our disappointing defeat at the hands of Buttevant last Saturday evening. We knew we were coming up against strong footballers and we needed to get a good start but instead it was the opposition who got off to a flyer and it could be said they got the start we needed. After five minutes they led 1-02 to no score and it was always going to be hard to come back from a five point deficit. But our lads battled hard, they fought to get back into the game and they got a life line five minutes before half time when they were awarded a penalty and this reduced the gap to three points, 1-6 to 1-3. Both sides tagged on another point before the break with Eoin McGrath completing the scoring for the first half and at half time we trailed 1-7 to 1-4. We had eight wides in the first half and had we been more successful in front of goal, we could have been a lot closer.

We needed a strong start to the second half and a free from Brian Sheehan after the break reduced the deficit to two points. Buttevant tagged on another before Tom Twomey reduced it to two yet again, 1-8 to 1-6. We were battling and tackling hard and we were beginning to get on top of the opposition. We had a great chance to reduce the gap to one through another free but unfortunately it went wide of the post and Buttevant went back up the field to increase the lead to four points with two quick points from play. This seemed to be the turning point in the game and with a quarter of an hour to play the score line read, 1-10 to 1-6.  Our lads never gave up but Buttevant we were well on top and unfortunately a mix up in our defence handed them their second goal in the 53rd minute. Buttevant finished the game with 14 men when they had a player sent off in the dying minutes but it would have no bearing on the result and they ran out winners on the final score line of 2-13 to 1-09.

On behalf of the club we would like to sincerely thank the management of Liam Kenny, Tom Twomey Snr, Johnny Lane and Physio Aisling Lane and all the players for the hard work and tremendous commitment they put in all year to get to the final. But the lads aren’t finished yet! Despite our loss last Saturday we are still into the first round of the County Junior ‘A’ Football Championship where we will meet Kilmacabee. No fixture for this game has been announced yet.  We wish the lads the very best of luck in the county.
