THROWBACK THURSDAY

Capt. Wm F Lomasney Cup - Presented to the winners of the Avondhu U21 A Hurling Championship.

“Captain William Francis Lomasney (1841 - 1884) – Born in Cork to parents Susan Mackey and William Lomasney Snr., the family emigrated in 1844 to Cincinnati, Ohio where they settled, until William (otherwise known as ‘”Captain Mackay”) after serving in the American Civil War returned to Ireland in 1865 to take part in the Fenian rising. After the failure of the rising itself he continued to lend daring raids for arms until his capture in February 1868 which notably included the ill-fated 1867 capture of Ballyknockane R.I.C Barracks at Mourneabbey, which was close to the birthplace of martyred Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomás Mac Curtain, and a series of audacious robberies of coastguard stations including the famous Martello tower heist at Fota Island, Cork on St. Stephen’s Day. Upon his release in 1871 he returned to America to settle in Detroit, Michigan where he set up a book shop and became a very active member of the Fenian Brotherhood and Clan na Gael before returning to Ireland once again in 1881 to take part in the Fenian dynamite campaign organized by Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa, only to be fatally wounded in a failed attempt to dynamite London Bridge on December 13th, 1884.”

In 1967 a new piece of silverware was donated to the North Cork board by Mr. Sean Lomasney (R.I.P.) of Dunmanway (ex-Kilworth native & the clubs first ever Secretary) who donated a cup in honour of an old IRA / Fenian, Volunteer, Capt. William Francis Lomasney for which the board decided to dedicate to the U21 A hurling championship. Coincidently, the first club to in fact receive this trophy was Kilworth when on Sunday May 19th, 1968, they won the delayed (due to Foot and Mouth restrictions) 1967 U21 A hurling championship by defeating Rathluírc 7-6 to 1-4 at Castletownroche with Patsy O’Mahony the victorious Kilworth Captain receiving the trophy from Sean Lomasney, the donor of the cup and a kinsman of the Fenian leader. Enroute to this success Kilworth firstly saw off the challenge of Harbour Rovers, followed by Kildorrery who the title holders were, then a semi-final defeat of Castletownroche by the narrowest of margins before convincingly beating Rathluírc in the final of a campaign that lasted thirteen months. To date Kilworth have just won this U21 A grade competition on a total of three occasions since it was inaugurated in 1964 by the North Cork board, 1965 V Ballyhea (6-10 to 3-5), 1967 V Rathluírc (7-6 to 1-4), & 2016 V Fermoy (2-10 to 1-7) to which the same trophy to this very day stands for the taking.

Pictured is the victorious Kilworth U21 hurling team of 1967 who won the delayed North Cork U21 A Hurling Championship by convincingly defeating Rathluírc 7-6 to 1-4 in a one sided contest which was played at Castletownroche on Sunday May 19th, 1968.
